WHY ARE PLASTIC SURGEONS BETTER THAN GENERAL DOCTORS?

They have the aesthetic skills and abilities to create a natural-looking head of hair, to make your expectations a reality. They have the medical skills and expertise to perform the surgery needed to achieve these results without leaving any sign of intervention. They use their specialised training in the art of aesthetic surgery to mimic nature. Carefully using the natural qualities of unevenness, irregularity and asymmetry and by precise placement of follicles in harmony with neighbouring hair, the doctors are able to make enhancements which look as though nature itself had created them. They use the delicate techniques required for facial surgery to ensure there are no unsightly marks or scars.

Hair loss is a very personal condition. Indeed, each individual is entitled to consider her own situation to be unique - the result of inherited genes and personal circumstances. It is important for any doctor advising on hair loss treatment to recognise the individual needs of each patient. But in order to assess how these personal requirements can be fulfilled it is necessary for doctors to relate an individual's situation to the way hair loss has been seen to develop generally.

For this reason, charts have been developed to help categorise the progressive extent of hair loss. There is no precise distinction between one stage and the next but the charts are very useful when describing your hair loss to someone else or as a means of reference for you to evaluate and record changes in your own condition.

These illustrations, based on the Ludwig Scale charts, show the stages of what is referred to as Female Pattern hair loss. They are particularly relevant to Androgenetic Alopecia and Traction Alopecia which follow a recognised pattern of development. But it should be noted that hair loss in women is not as distinct as in men. Instead, it manifests more often as diffuse thinning throughout the scalp rather than baldness. Some other causes of hair loss do not follow any particular pattern as hair can be lost from the whole head or from any part of the head.

Use these illustrations to establish your own situation and refer to them when you complete our Consultation Advice Form or when you send us an email.
