HOW LONG BEFORE I SEE RESULTS FROM A HAIR TRANSPLANTATION?

It takes about a year for the results of hair restoration to be fully appreciated. By that time, the implanted hair will have grown and you will be able to brush and trim your hair as normal.
TREATMENT VACATIONS

Why not combine your treatment with a vacation in Greece - giving you time to relax and re-adjust in one of the most picturesque parts of the world. There are over 200 islands to visit, some just a short hop from Athens. We can advise you on places to visit and we can help arrange your stay.
WHAT IS A MEGA-SESSION?

A hair transplantation in which a large area of baldness is covered using a large number of grafts is referred to as a mega-session. Up to 10,000 hairs can be transplanted in one session using multiple follicular extraction depending on the availability of sufficient donor hair. Using the Micro-Dense-Pack T-T technique perfected by the doctors here, it is possible to completely transform extensive baldness into a respectable head of hair in just one session lasting about 4 hours.

QI lose some hair every time I wash my hair. How many hairs is it normal to lose daily?

Normal hair loss is 50 to 100 hairs daily but these will re-grow as part of the normal growth cycle.

QDoes stress contribute
to hair loss?

Of course! Stressful experiences such as surgery or a death of friend of family member can be followed by hair loss. This is a temporary phenomenon (called alopecia areata). Unless other problems co-exist, hair should grow back after a while.

QDoes frequent hair washing cause hair loss?

Exactly the opposite! Frequent washing is beneficial because it removes the sebum (a secretion of the sebaceous glands of the scalp) that contains large quantities of DHT. DHT contained in the sebum can be re-absorbed by the skin and affect hair, increasing hair loss.

QIs hair transplantation performed with the aid
of a microscope?

Yes. Modern hair transplantation techniques require that hair follicles are isolated from a strip of hair bearing skin with the aid of a microscope. Each follicle can contain 1 to 5 hairs and each follicle has to be isolated so that it can be implanted to produce a natural result.

QIs it possible to transplant hair from one person to another?

No. Hair transplantation is, more accurately, hair relocation. Follicles can only be implanted into the same person from whom they were taken. Follicles moved from one body to another will be rejected by the body of the recipient.

QI've heard about transplantation of artificial hair. Is that possible?

No. At present, there is no artificial material for use in hair transplants which is accepted by the human body. Artificial hair is foreign to the human body and, after a short time, will be rejected, often causing infections.

QWhat will my new hair be like?

After transplantation, your new hair will be just like your normal hair and you should treat it normally too. The hair will grow normally and you can wash, cut and dye it just like normal healthy hair.

QWill hair transplantation
leave a scar or mark?

No. With new techniques and with the skills of an experienced Plastic Surgeon, there will be no marks or scars in the areas from which the hair is taken, nor will there be any marks in the area of implantation. Plastic Surgeons are trained to perform aesthetic enhancements without leaving marks.

QCan I have a hair transplantation at any
time of year?

There is no reason at all why you cannot have a hair transplantation at any time of year which suits you.

QDo I need to stay in a clinic
after hair transplantation?

No. Hair transplantation is plastic surgery using topical anaesthetics which have only a short-term effect on the body - just the same as going to a dentist. You will need to go back to see the doctor for the first wash of the new hair - usually the next day - after that you just need to follow the advice of your doctor.

QCould I return home
the next day?

Yes you could. There is no danger in travelling the next day. You could spend the night after transplantation in a hotel nearby. In the morning you should see the doctor in order for him to wash your hair and give you advice and after that you could travel home without any problem.

QIs it possible to carry out hair transplantation in an area of damage caused by an accident (e.g. a burn or scars)?

Of course, but you should always arrange a professional consultation with a Plastic Surgeon. In most cases, a combination of plastic surgery and hair transplantation will solve even the most serious problems.

QWhat exactly is meant
by a consultation?

Consultation is a term to be wary of. Sometimes it can simply mean communication with an office assistant. Often it is prepared without the involvement of a doctor. When you send your details to the Group of Independent Doctors, your file will be forwarded to the Plastic Surgeon of your choice. You can be sure that this doctor will personally examine your details and will advise you, himself, of the most suitable procedure to have. The next stage will be to have a Personal Consultation with your Plastic Surgeon. This will usually take place the day before the transplantation. You will be able to discuss with the Plastic Surgeon the design of your new hairline and finalise the area to be covered.

QHow can I communicate
with a 'foreign' doctor?

The doctors in the Group of Independent Doctors speak English, Italian, French and German as well as Greek. We can also provide a personal translator who will be present when you meet the doctor if you wish to communicate in another language.

QHow is the cost of
surgery calculated?

By the number of grafts. A graft could contain from one to five hairs. The larger the area to be covered the more grafts will be required and the greater the cost. Your Plastic Surgeon will assess how much donor hair is available and establish what area is to be covered. It is then possible to determine the number of grafts needed for transplantation and to calculate the total cost. You will have been told of, and agreed, the exact cost before you start the procedure.

QWhy are there big differences in the price of hair transplantation?

As you may have discovered, there can be a wide range of prices quoted for hair transplantation. The cost will depend on several factors. Some quotations may be based on a charge per HAIR transplanted, others, like the quotations you will receive from the Group of Independent Doctors, will be based upon a charge per GRAFT. A graft may contain between 1-5 hairs resulting in almost three times as many hairs transplanted as grafts. Make sure you are comparing like with like. Other factors to consider are the method used, the type of consultation with a specialist, the qualifications and expertise of the surgeon, the equipment . . .   Different organisations will offer different qualities of service for each of these factors. The members of the Group of Independent Doctors each set their own fees. They are free of the burden of overheads which clinics have. They are experts.

QI wear a wig. Will I be able to have a hair transplant?

Yes. Many people have chosen to replace their wig with a permanent solution to hair loss. As long as the skin beneath the wig is healthy, not scratched (affected by excoriation), hair can be transplanted without problems. After the transplantation, you may wish to continue to wear a wig until the new hair starts to grow. This should not be a problem as long as you follow the doctor's advice.

QCan I continue to wear a wig after a hair transplant?

Of course. The transplanted hair will grow beneath a wig as does normal hair. Some people prefer to continue wearing a wig until the transplanted hair has grown to a decent length.

QWhat exactly are androgens?

Androgens are male hormones, produced by the adrenal glands and gonads, and are present in both males and females. The main androgens are testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, and they are responsible for inducing maleness.

QWhat is dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and why is it responsible for hair loss?

Dihydrotestosterone is one of the main androgens of the human body and is produced by testosterone with the help of an enzyme called 5 alpha-reductase. Dihydrotestosterone stimulates hair growth in the face and body, but at the same time also causes shrinkage of hair follicles that are sensitive to it (genetic predisposition).
